High school softball: 6A/5A state tournament roundup from Tuesday’s games

6A playoffs (Bracket 1)

Riverton 10, Layton 0

Kaysen Korth pitched six innings of shutout softball by only allowing three hits, while Chloe Borges had another great day at the plate going 2 for 2 with two home runs, four RBIs and two walks as Riverton advanced in the 6A winners bracket.

Weber 4, Clearfield 1

Brooke Merrill struck out 11 batters and also went 2 for 4 at the plate to lead Weber past Clearfield during the first game of the 6A playoffs at Spanish Fork Complex. Kendall Strasburg drove in two runs to provide the offensive support for Weber.

Riverton 11, Weber 1

Chloe Borges didn’t allow a hit over five innings of shutout softball, while Kaysen Korth did the damage in the circle going 2 for 2 with two home runs and four RBIs as Riverton won its second game of the day to remain in the 6A winners bracket.

Clearfield 10, Layton 0

Kaycee Valencia went 3 for 3 with two home runs and three RBIs, while Jayci Finch picked up the win while driving in two runs herself as Clearfield kept its season alive with a win in the 6A one-loss bracket.

6A playoffs (Bracket 2)

Bingham 5, Skyridge 1

Averi Hanny struck out six and only allowed three hits as she pitched Bingham past Skyridge in the first game of the double-elimination 6A tournament. Shelbee Jones and Hanny each drove in a pair of runs to do the damage at the plate for the Miners.

Fremont 9, Herriman 4

Brinley Johnson went 1 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs as Fremont jumped out to a big lead on Herriman as it marched on in the 6A winners bracket. Kaci Smith picked up the victory in the circle for Fremont scattering eight hits over seven innings.

Herriman 11, Skyridge 0

Ashlyn Bailey, Abby Grundy and Milo Lancaster all homered to keep Herriman’s season alive as it blanked Skyridge in five innings in the 6A one-loss bracket. Lancaster finishing the game going 2 for 3 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Kiaria Smith earned the win in the circle, striking out seven batters in five innings.

Bingham 10, Fremont 5

Braxtyn Hunter’s grand slam highlighted an eight-run first inning as Bingham rolled past Fremont for the 6A winners bracket victory. Emily Dority and Shelbee Jones also homered for the Miners, with Averi Hanny striking out four to pick up the victory.


5A playoffs (Bracket 1)

Spanish Fork 15, Murray 0

Spanish Fork rolled past Murray to the easy win to advance in the 5A winners bracket.

Springville 5, Bountiful 4

Avery Nelson hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Springville rallied past Bountiful for the 5A playoff victory to advance in the 5A winners bracket. Emma Liddiard also had a strong day at the plate for Springville going 1 for 1 with a home run and three walks.

Spanish Fork 4, Springville 1

Trinity Benson and Avery Sapp each drove in two runs, while Sapp also had a great game in the circle, striking out seven as Spanish Fork beat rival Springville in the 5A winners bracket game.

Bountiful 12, Murray 2

Annie Salazar went 2 for 3 with a double, home run and four RBIs as Bountiful kept its season alive with a one-loss bracket victory over Murray.

5A playoffs (Bracket 2)

Mountain Ridge 9, Lehi 8

Mountain Ridge advanced in the 5A winners bracket by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past Lehi for the win. Tessa Hokanson had a great day at the plate going 2 for 5 with two home runs, while Tasha Hokanson went 2 for 4 with a double.

Wasatch 3, Farmington 2

Wasatch scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally past Farmington to advance in the 5A winners bracket. Maclee McPhie went 2 for 3 to lead Wasatch, with Payge Armendariz and Charly Cluff each driving in a run in the seventh inning.

Farmington 11, Lehi 3

Farmington bounced back from it’s heart-breaking loss in the first game on Tuesday with a convincing win against Lehi in the second game to keep its season alive in the one-loss bracket.

Mountain Ridge 5, Wasatch 4

Mychaela McClanahan had a great day at the plate going 2 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs as Mountain Ridge rallied past Wasatch in the bottom of the seventh inning for the 5A winners bracket victory. Taegan Smith drove in the winning run with a double over the center fielder.
