The 6A softball quarterfinals got underway in Spanish Fork Tuesday evening with No. 1 Riverton taking on No. 5 Weber and No. 2 Bingham facing No. 6 Fremont. In both games, Region 3 picked up the wins over Region 1. Riverton quickly took down Weber 11-1, needing only five innings to do so. Bingham followed that game with a 10-5 victory over Fremont.
Riverton looked its part Tuesday. The top seed used just six innings to defeat Layton 10-0 and advance to its game with Weber. The Warriors’ one run was the first point scored on the Silverwolves in two weeks, but did little to slow down their opponent.
“We’ve talked a lot about execution. Not worrying about the score or the call. Control the controllables. Go out and execute,” Riverton head coach Katelyn Elliott said. “They’re doing a good job at the plate. They’re going up with a game plan and doing exactly what we’ve asked of them. If it’s not our No. 1 batter doing it, it’s our No. 2 and our No. 3. You can’t ask for anything more than that.”
The Silverwolves executed to near perfection with multiple batters contributing to the blowout victory. Riverton scored in every inning, putting six runs on the board in the fourth and hitting three home runs in just four innings at the plate. Junior third baseman Kaysen Korth hit two of her team’s home runs, one in the first and another in the third, bringing a teammate home in the process each time. Sophomore Jolie Mayfield went the distance on another two-run shot for the Silverwolves in the fourth.
With the win, Riverton extended its unbeaten streak to 20 games and advanced to the semifinal round where it will play the winner of Weber and Clearfield.
Bingham did not give the ball any time to rest in the game that followed, putting on a hitting clinic in the first. The Miners had three home runs in the initial inning, scoring eight runs and giving the school a comfortable lead for the rest of the game.
Bingham sophomore Shelbee Jones and senior Emily Dority hit the Miners’ first two home runs back to back, giving their school a 2-0 lead. Two runs later, after cycling through the batting order, Braxtyn Hunter bombed a grand slam over the center field fence, forcing Fremont to make a pitching change mid-inning.
“These girls just hit the ball hard, they really do,” Miner head coach Mikki Jackson said. “They also stay loose. They have a sense about them that they’re here to have fun and play the game intensely. (The first) was a great inning to make us confident for the rest of the way. I think because we waited for that timing and exploded through the ball, that was the difference. If we had gotten anxious, we don’t see those runs.”
A strong first inning propelled Bingham into the next round. The Miners will face the winner of Fremont and Herriman.
Both Riverton and Bingham’s semifinal matchups are set to begin at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
