President Joe Biden has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending to rebuild infrastructure and help families and individuals. While the intent is good, the amount of spending is far beyond realistic, even for our federal government.

These amounts of money are incomprehensible to most human beings. It’s time to have a serious, good-faith negotiation between the parties in Congress and the president.

Republicans, rather than rejecting these proposals out-of-hand in their entirety, need to take a red pencil to the proposed spending bills, mark out the items they can’t live with and adjust the spending for items they can live with or want. Then all parties can sit down and hammer out the final deals.

Both sides will have to give. Neither side will be entirely happy, but each will have some of what they want. Part of something is better than all of nothing.
