Tournament time

One hundred years ago, just three teams played in the first state football tournament. That marked a big change from the previous method of choosing a champion: the title went to the team with the best overall record. Perhaps it’s fitting that the 2019 season sees another major change in the state tournament format by expanding to include 103 of 109 teams.

In 1919, 25 schools fielded squads; Box Elder, East, and Payson won their regions. In the semifinals, East thrashed Box Elder, 60-0 and in the finals, tormented Payson, 79-0.

The 2019 tournament doesn’t seed teams by predetermined placement based on region finish as prep squads and fans are used to. And it spans five Fridays. But it’s not the first time for either of those. In 1929, a committee paired teams from week to week. Some of the 10 qualifiers received multi-week byes, but the eventual champion, Tooele, was forced to play five consecutive games. The playoffs began Nov. 8 and the championship game — Tooele 32, Richfield 0 — was played Dec. 4 (two days short of five straight Fridays). That was the only attempt at seeding by committee because of the confusion and controversy created in subjectively matching teams during the playoffs.

This year, nine teams return to the playoffs for the first time in at least five seasons:

  • Copper Hills — last appearance in 2004
  • Clearfield — 2005
  • Payson, Westlake — 2012
  • Layton, Timpanogos — 2013

Home-field advantage

Twelve schools, led by Skyline’s remarkable 38-0 home playoff record, have won every postseason game on their own turf. Five of those 12 host this year: Corner Canyon (6 wins), Parowan (4), Skyridge (4), Ridgeline (1) and Salem Hills (1).

A dozen more hosting this week — or next in case of a first-round bye — have a decided home-field postseason advantage. By percentage:

Undefeated regular seasons

Three teams, Beaver, Corner Canyon and Park City completed the 2019 season with perfect 10-0 records. It marks Beaver’s sixth (also 1969, ’70, ’73, ’79 and ’87), Corner Canyon’s fourth (also 2014, ’17 and ’18) and Park City’s ninth (also 1908, ’09, ’33, ’34, ’36, ’61, ’81 and 2006).

Beaver is off to its best start since 1987 when the Beavers went 11-1, losing in the championship game.

Corner Canyon heads to the playoffs undefeated for a third straight year. In the history of Utah high school football, two teams have gone unbeaten four seasons in a row: Millard (1978-81) and Orem (1965-68). In addition to Corner Canyon, three others have posted “three-peat” undefeated regular seasons: Duchesne (2011-13), Millard (1957-59) and San Juan (2010-12).

Park City has matched its best-ever starts of 1981 and 2006 and most wins since 2009 when the Miners finished 11-2.

Winning streaks

Corner Canyon enters the playoffs on a 22-game winning streak, the longest active streak and tied for the 16th longest in state history. Beaver and Park City have won 10 straight and Sky View, eight. Juab, Olympus and Pine View have won seven in a row.

Most wins since …

  • American Leadership Academy (6-4) has its most victories and first winning season in its 14-year history, since 2006.
  • Mountain View (8-2) has its most wins since 1999 (10-1).
  • North Sanpete (9-1), its most since 2002 (11-1).

  • Hunter (7-2), its most since 2012 (7-3); the Wolverines last won eight games in 2009.
  • Monticello (6-3), its most since 2012 (7-5).

2019’s most-improved teams

Farmington leads the state as this year’s most-improved squad, going from 2-9 in 2018 to 8-1 so far, an improvement of 7.0 games. (The NCAA calculates this by taking the difference in victories and the difference in losses, adding the two numbers and dividing by 2.) North Summit (0-10 to 6-3) is 6.5 games better. Brighton (2-8 to 8-2) and Woods Cross (both 2-8 to 8-2) have improved by 6.0 games.

Shutouts

Hillcrest posted its first shutout since Sept. 4, 2009, a span of 108 games. Only Canyon View has gone longer (112 games).

Beaver and Sky View lead the state with four shutouts each this year.
